說明: 星雲會因酷似我們常見的形狀而聲名大噪，就像貓以擅於惹事而出了名一樣。 不過，沒有貓能創造出這個位在天蝎座方向的龐大貓掌星雲。 離我們5,500光年遠的貓掌星雲是個發射星雲，它紅色的輝光來自大量電離的氫原子。 亦稱為熊掌星雲或NGC 6334的貓掌星雲，其內部質量將近十倍太陽質量的恆星，是近在過去數百萬年內才誕生於此星雲裡。 上面這幅貓掌星雲的深空影像，拍攝於原子氫、氧和硫發光的波段。
