星系和星系團及所造成的四重遙遠超新星影像

說明: 那個星系周圍的不尋常亮斑是什麼？它們都是同一個超新星的影像。這是首次發現居間的質量所形成之重力透鏡，把單一個超新星分裂成多重影像。在此例之中，這個質量是一個大星系和它所屬的星系團。這幅主題影像，是由軌道上的哈伯太空望遠鏡攝於去年11月。而造成泛黃四重影像的Refsdal超新星，則發生在星系團後方的初期宇宙中。量測這些超新星影像的位置和時間延遲，應能讓天文學家推算出星系及星系團之內的暗物質含量。靠著耐心和一點運氣，接下來數年之中將能在附近測到這個超新星的第5個影像。
