說明： 在天文望遠鏡發明之前， 是否已有天文台的存在呢？ 其中的實例之一， 為現仍保存著的 中國 北京古觀象台。 自14世紀起， 天文學家就在此一觀測台， 裝設協助 觀測的大型儀器， 來精準地量測 恆星和行星的位置。 世界各地有許多 古天文台 ， 有的甚至 比文字史更古老。 這些古天文台的量測， 決定了何時耕作播種、 如何 在大海中 航行、 與何時該舉行祭祀。 這張 人工上色的 燈籠片 (lantern slide) 拍攝於 1895年。
